Ribbon Mics in Education: Rick Earl at Elon University
At Elon University, students are learning live sound with the same premium gear trusted by top professionals – thanks to Rick Earl, Production Manager and long-time advocate for ribbon microphones.
In a recent interview with AEA, Earl shared how ribbons have become a teaching tool for concepts like mic placement, signal flow, and tonal shaping. From jazz ensembles and gospel singers to drum overheads and acoustic festivals, AEA ribbons are inspiring the next generation of engineers with their natural, detailed sound.

Earl explains: “The ultimate goal is capturing sound as naturally as possible. The right ribbon mic makes students think more deeply about placement, space, and tone – and that’s an invaluable lesson.”
Students at Elon regularly get hands-on with AEA mics such as the N13, N8, N22, R44C, and R84, experiencing firsthand why ribbons are trusted on some of the world’s most iconic stages and recordings.
