Grove Hill Audio Liverpool Variable Mu Tube Compressor

Grove Hill Audio Liverpool Variable Mu Tube Compressor

Grove Hill Audio introduces the LIVERPOOL, a hand assembled, all-tube feedback compressor.

Tube compressors were first introduced in the early 1930’s, and became widely used in the USA and England in the 60’s. An American Mu tube compressor found its way to England were it was improved with several modifications; these units are still in use today. These rare iterations have never been commercially available. For years there’s been much curiosity surrounding the actual modifications made to these famous compressors.  To differentiate the modified units, the original green front panels were painted gray and a new model number was assigned.

In the spirit of the elder engineers, we respectfully took liberties and made subtle circuit and control modifications that make this compressor very special. We listened carefully and tweaked it over and over to capture the vintage tone and vibe that make it unique. We then twisted knobs and pushed the tube circuitry, exposing additional creative capabilities.

Then we did a little hot rodding to the Liverpool – you can push it harder on the front end and the back end creating a useful creative tool. This is why the product is unique and NOT a clone. It is a hybrid, carefully thought out in the spirit of the original Mu tube compressor, but new to the market with additional design enhancements.

The LIVERPOOL compressor took well over a year to recreate the sonic character relative to the units still in use at world famous recording studios. Custom wound input and output transformers (Made in the USA), critical component choices and circuit layout were all carefully considered in developing a reliable creative tool for a wide variety of instruments, vocals and program sources.

MOTU AUDIO INTERFACES DELIVER AVB/TSN ETHERNET SUPPORT FOR OS X

MOTU AUDIO INTERFACES DELIVER AVB/TSN ETHERNET SUPPORT FOR OS X

CAMBRIDGE, MA — Wednesday, March 23, 2016. Today MOTU released a free firmware update for the 1248, 16A, 8M and other latest-generation audio interfaces that supports AVB/TSN Ethernet connection to a Mac® running OS X® El Capitan (10.11). Users can connect their MOTU hardware to the Mac using a standard CAT-5e or CAT-6 Ethernet cable up to 100 meters long and stream up to 64 audio channels to and from audio applications running on the Mac at sample rates up to 192 kHz. Any recent-generation Mac with a built-in Ethernet port running OS X 10.11 is supported.

“MOTU has a notable track record of industry firsts, and we are proud to be the first pro audio company to fully adopt and support this new audio connectivity standard for Mac,” said Jim Cooper, Director of Marketing at MOTU. “We are pleased to deliver AVB/TSN support for Mac, plus other significant new features, to existing MOTU audio interface users through a free, downloadable, easy-to-install firmware update.”

With affordable cable runs that can be substantially longer than USB or Thunderbolt, Ethernet allows users to position their MOTU interface much farther away from their Mac, across the room in a machine closet with other gear, for example, or in an isolation booth down the hall, near microphones and musicians. Using Ethernet frees up the USB and Thunderbolt port(s) on the Mac for displays and other devices. Ethernet also opens up the user’s Mac to the world of audio networking.

Users can connect two or more MOTU audio interfaces to their Mac using the affordable, five-port MOTU AVB Switch™ (or any other standard AVB/TSN-compatible Ethernet switch) to build an expanded audio network. All devices on the network can transmit and receive full-bandwidth multi-channel PCM audio throughout the network with extremely low, fixed network latency, even across multiple switches (known as “hops”). In this scenario, users can connect multiple Macs, which share full access to the entire network.

MOTU audio interfaces bring the power and promise of AVB/TSN Ethernet audio networking to the Mac platform. Users can build advanced, high-performance audio routing configurations to suit virtually any use-case scenario, from small project studios to large-scale industrial installations in facilities with multiple rooms, floors and buildings. With copper cable lengths of 100 meters between any two points, or fiber-optic network cables many hundreds of meters in length, audio can be distributed across very long distances in facilities as large as football stadiums or film studio lots.

Other new features introduced in MOTU’s free firmware upgrade include remote control of preamp settings across the network, a new graphic UI for the on-screen mixer’s multi-band EQ and compressor in the web app control software, SMPTE time code support, the ability to convert time code (LTC) to MIDI time code (MTC), password protection for interfaces on a network and other productivity enhancements.

AVB (Audio Video Bridging) is a set of technical standards developed by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) 802.1 standards committee to extend the capabilities of Ethernet so that it can support time-synchronized, low latency streaming services throughout an Ethernet network. The IEEE is in the process of renaming AVB to TSN (Time Sensitive Networking) to address the expanded scope of the protocol into other industries (beyond audio and video) as it continues to evolve.

Managed by an AVB/TSN-compatible Ethernet switch, AVB/TSN network traffic can co-exist with other data streams on the network but enjoys reserved bandwidth to ensure timely, guaranteed delivery without interruption. AVB/TSN offers extremely low, fixed network latency across multiple hops (up to six switches), coupled with high bandwidth capacity capable of supporting over 500 audio channels simultaneously across the network.

INTRODUCING MOOG MUSIC MOTHER-32

Semi-Modular Standalone Synthesizer & Eurorack Module

Today, we are proud to announce the release of Mother-32, a distinctively vintage-voiced analog performance and production synthesizer, meticulously handcrafted to inspire unique sound creation, new music and endless sonic exploration.

During the prototype phase, we worked with 3 unique synthesists, Erika, Max Ravitz, and Bana Haffar to produce a video that explores Mother-32’s vast capabilities. Through performance and sound design, each artist displays the extensive vocabulary found within Mother-32.

Watch the video below.

The Mother-32 is mounted in a black, laser-etched extruded aluminum enclosure and finished with traditional wood sidepieces. The 100% analog instrument features a comprehensive voltage-controlled sequencer and 32-point analog patchbay.

Mother-32’s semi-modular design means that no patching is required to create powerful analog sound. This allows musicians of any experience level to quickly make music. Synthesists will enjoy exploring the extensive 32-point patchbay which unlocks truly expressive, unique and complex synthesis capabilities. The patchbay provides access to a wealth of sounds and functionality including an assignable CV output jack, MIDI to CV conversion, a second voltage-controlled mixer, sync, interconnectivity and expandability.

Onboard sound sources include a powerful 10-octave analog oscillator with variable pulse width, and an all-analog white noise generator. The signals from each are blended together by a voltage-controlled mixer for dynamic sound creation and manipulation. From the mixer output, sound travels through a Moog Ladder Filter with selectable low pass and high pass filter types.

Musical creation and programming is executed via Mother-32’s comprehensive 32-step, voltage controlled sequencer or external MIDI controller. There are two sequencing styles, allowing each user to create new musical ideas with ease and familiarity. A total of 64 patterns can be stored within Mother-32’s memory bank.

Mother-32 is an expandable analog ecosystem that allows multiple units to easily be mounted and patched together for extended synthesis capabilities.
