Avantone Pro MIXCUBE ACTIVE – 5.25″ Mini Active Reference Monitor (CREME – Single Unit)
OVERVIEW
The Avantone Pro MIXCUBE ACTIVE (CREME – Single Unit) is a powered, shielded, full-range studio mini-reference monitor designed to reveal how your mixes translate to real-world, bass-challenged playback systems. Mixcubes provide a focused perspective on midrange balance, vocal placement and arrangement details that can be overlooked on larger full-range monitors. If you want a trusted secondary reference for checking how your mix translates beyond the main monitors, the Mixcube is an invaluable studio tool.
As a powered evolution of the classic 5C Sound Cube concept used in professional studios for decades, the Mixcube Active combines the familiar benefits of single-driver reference monitoring with the convenience of integrated amplification. Avantone developed a proprietary 5.25” driver featuring a precision die-cast aluminium frame and custom paper cone made from New Zealand pulp blended with mica fibres for rigidity and longevity. Combined with a sealed, low-resonance MDF cabinet, the result is a smooth, open and highly revealing presentation with a particularly useful focus through the critical midrange.
While 2-way and 3-way studio monitors are designed to provide a comprehensive full-range reference, there is still enormous value in hearing a mix through a smaller, bass-limited system. The Mixcube is designed to simulate the kind of playback environment found in televisions, computers, car stereos, clock radios and other compact systems. Its single full-range driver eliminates crossover-related tonal anomalies, providing a revealing perspective on vocals, guitars, keyboards and other important midrange elements.
More than twelve months of research, comparative listening and refinement went into the voicing of the Mixcube. The result is a modern interpretation of the compact reference cube, delivering a smoother midrange, transparent high-frequency response and extended bass while retaining the essential character that made the original 5C-style monitors so useful to engineers and producers.
The cabinet is constructed from high-rigidity MDF selected for its naturally low-resonance characteristics, with radiused edges and a high-gloss black finish. A 7mm neoprene pad integrated into the base provides skid-resistant acoustic isolation, while the recessed 5/8”-27 microphone-stand mount provides additional flexibility for creative placement in the studio or on location.
The custom paper-cone driver combines modern FEA modelling with traditional speaker-design techniques. New Zealand pulp blended with mica fibres provides rigidity and longevity, while the Japanese cloth surround offers controlled damping and predictable compliance over the life of the driver. The motor structure uses certified 1008 low-carbon steel, with Y-40 grade MIL-SPEC magnets creating a high-power, low-distortion motor system. A proprietary die-cast aluminium frame supports the driver and helps minimise unwanted mechanical energy transfer.
Powering the Mixcube Active is a professional Class A/B amplifier, giving you the convenience of a self-powered reference monitor without requiring an external amplifier. With balanced XLR/TRS connectivity, internal shielding, integrated acoustic isolation and flexible mounting options, the Mixcube Active is equally at home in professional studios, project studios, home setups and mobile rigs.
KEY HIGHLIGHTS
Full-Range Mini-Reference Monitoring
The Mixcube provides a focused full-range reference designed to reveal how a mix translates through smaller playback systems, making it an invaluable secondary monitoring tool.
Crossover-Free Single-Driver Design
A single full-range transducer eliminates crossover-related tonal anomalies, providing a particularly revealing perspective through the critical midrange where vocals, guitars and keyboards often reside.
Inspired by a Studio Classic
Inspired by the legendary 5C Sound Cubes used in professional studios for decades, the Mixcube retains the essential concept of compact full-range reference monitoring while delivering a smoother, more extended and refined presentation.
Smooth, Musical Response
Extensive research, comparative listening and voicing resulted in a monitor with a smooth midrange, transparent top end and extended bass while retaining the familiar character that made small reference cubes so useful.
Custom High-Performance Driver
The proprietary driver combines a custom paper cone, mica-fibre reinforcement, controlled cloth surround and robust motor structure to deliver musical character, durability and predictable performance.
Rigid, Low-Resonance Cabinet
The sealed cabinet is constructed from high-rigidity MDF chosen for its natural low-resonance characteristics, helping provide a stable acoustic platform for the full-range driver.
Flexible Placement Options
The compact cabinet can be used in fixed or remote locations and includes a recessed microphone-stand mount for creative positioning beyond conventional desktop placement.
Integrated Acoustic Isolation
A neoprene pad built into the cabinet base provides skid resistance while helping acoustically isolate the monitor from its supporting surface.
Studio or Remote Monitoring
Its self-powered design and compact form make the Mixcube practical for both permanent studio installations and portable or remote recording and mixing environments.
