Audio WA76-D – Single-Channel Clean Gain Discrete FET Compressor

OVERVIEW

The Warm Audio WA76-D brings the legendary speed and character of a “Rev D” 76-style compressor into a modern, feature-rich studio processor. Built around a 100% discrete analog FET signal path, the WA76-D combines ultra-responsive dynamic control with a refined, lower-noise character, making it equally at home tracking vocals, drums, guitars and bass or adding punch, density and polish during mixing. Its custom CineMag O-12 input and 5002 output transformers are built to vintage specifications, helping deliver the distinctive analog tone associated with this classic compressor design.

While faithfully retaining the essential controls and behaviour of the original 76-style design, the WA76-D adds a range of practical features for modern recording workflows. A 100% dry/wet Mix control enables parallel compression, while the variable 30–300 Hz sidechain high-pass filter provides greater control over how low frequencies influence compression. Selectable 600 Ω and 10 kΩ input impedance settings make it easier to integrate with both traditional analog equipment and modern audio interfaces, while active bypass can operate the unit as a line amplifier and true bypass provides straightforward A/B comparison.

The single-channel WA76-D also provides external sidechain connectivity and stereo-linking capability, allowing multiple units to be linked for more advanced applications, including surround and immersive compression. With its exceptionally fast attack, musical release characteristics, selectable ratios and iconic “All-Buttons-In” mode, the WA76-D can move effortlessly from transparent dynamic control to aggressive, characterful compression and hard-limiter-style effects. Housed in a rugged 2U 19-inch rackmount chassis and featuring balanced XLR and TRS connectivity, it is built as a professional studio workhorse with the flexibility to adapt to virtually any recording chain.

The continuously variable 30–300 Hz sidechain high-pass filter gives you greater control over low-frequency content driving the compressor, helping maintain a more controlled response.

Selectable Input Impedance

Switch between 600 Ω for traditional analog integration and 10 kΩ to better match the outputs of modern recording interfaces.

Ultra-Fast Attack & Flexible Release

The vintage-spec attack range extends from 20 µs to 800 µs, while release ranges from 50 ms to 1.1 seconds, providing everything from extremely fast peak control to smoother dynamic shaping.

“All-Buttons-In” Mode

Engaging all four ratio buttons simultaneously produces the distinctive, aggressive compression associated with classic 76-style techniques, including experimental and hard-limiter-style tones.

External Sidechain & Stereo Linking

The WA76-D provides external sidechain access for applications such as ducking and real-time analog de-essing, while stereo-link connections allow up to 10 WA76-D compressors to be linked for surround or immersive applications.

Active & True Bypass

Active bypass allows the unit to function as a line amplifier, while true bypass provides a straightforward way to compare processed and unprocessed signals.
