The Maag Audio EQ2-500 is a compact yet powerful 2-band equalizer module tailored to fit seamlessly into a single slot within the renowned 500VPR series racks. Leveraging core features and design philosophies from the Maag Audio EQ4M standalone equalizer, both the EQ2 and EQ4-500 series equalizers encapsulate the essence of Maag’s audio expertise. Notably, all Maag Audio products are characterized by their commitment to minimal phase shift, optimal headroom, transparency, and user-friendly recallable settings facilitated by detent controls.

Front Panel Layout and Signal Path
At the foundation of the EQ2’s front panel lies the input attenuator, offering 0 dB at full clockwise rotation and scaling down to -12 dB when fully counter-clockwise. This seemingly simple addition holds significance in effectively gain-staging a recording chain when connected to a microphone preamp’s output. Monitoring the input signal is made possible by the presence of a green signal present indicator, alerting users to signal levels exceeding -20 dBu. Conversely, a red peak LED illuminates when the output signal approaches or reaches clip levels of +23 dBu.
Low Mid Frequency (LMF) Equalization
The EQ2’s midsection is occupied by the low mid frequency (LMF) equalization controls, including the selector and gain knobs, accompanied by the section’s in/out switch. Operating in bell-shaped peaking equalization mode with switchable Q, the LMF equalizer provides precise tone sculpting capabilities. It offers both a sharp, surgical-like peak/dip position and a broader shape position suitable for studio tracking, stereo bus applications, and mastering tasks. The front panel offers two sets of frequencies: red frequencies correspond to the sharper Q setting (40 Hz, 65 Hz, 150 Hz, 250 Hz, and 1 kHz), while white frequencies align with the broader Q setting (Sub/10 Hz, 57 Hz, 88 Hz, 220 Hz, 400 Hz, and 1.4 kHz).
Air Band Equalization
The uppermost section of the EQ2 is dedicated to the Air Band, characterized by its ability to add brilliance and sheen to audio signals. With a gain control capable of providing up to 20 dB of shelving boost, the Air Band section empowers users to enhance their sound with finesse. An Air Band in/out switch allows for instant comparison and assessment of this remarkable effect. The frequencies available for adjustment within the Air Band span 2.5 kHz, 5 kHz, 10 kHz, 15 kHz, 20 kHz, and 40 kHz.
