Buzz Audio REQ-2.2 True Class A Resonance Equalizer

The REQ-2.2 is a high end stereo 4 band parametric equalizer like no other. Real inductor/capacitor parallel resonant circuits are coupled with our True Class A discrete amplifiers to present a sound that sets it apart from the crowd. Unlike vintage inductor based equalisers, the REQ has adjustable bandwidth and 72 frequency choices per channel. In addition, we have included an iron transformer based variable saturation circuit which provides a touch of vintage analog warmth to the sound as required.

The REQ is available in two versions. The recording version uses quality Alps variable pots for the cut/boost controls and offers +/-16dB of range. The mastering version uses light to the touch 23 position Elma switches for the cut/boost controls with +/- 8dB range and 0.5dB steps. In both versions, all other controls are switched. The high pass filter section of the mastering version has a softer slope (12dB/oct) compared to the recording version (18dB/oct) and the cutoff frequencies are more applicable to the mastering process (see the frequency chart below).

Controls

The low and high bands can be switched between bell curve or shelving curve. In shelf mode the bandwidth control converts to a shelf “slope” control allowing the user to vary the steepness of the shelf curve. The two mid bands are fixed as bell curves and feature two frequency ranges (x1/x2.5) to cover a large range of choices. The high pass filter has 6 frequency selections and the saturation circuit has 6 settings with different flavours (see the distortion specs below). All bands have their own bypass switch as does the saturation and high pass filter sections and a global bypass is provided. A peak led monitors the internal levels at each band and illuminates when the level reaches +22dBu.

Options

We are now offering an option for the Low Band section of the REQ. This option replaces the Choke based filter with an Active filter which provides a “tighter” bass sound. This option has come about from requests from some users who work with modern music styles in mastering. The only operational difference between the Active and Choke filters is in Shelf mode, the Bandwidth control is disabled.
